Formula Offering Watersports-Oriented Sportboats

While Formula Boats of Decatur, Ind., made its name on high-performance V-bottoms and still offers its FAS3Tech model line, the company continues to expand into other segments of the powerboat market. Announced in a press release this morning, the company’s 270 and 240 XS are the most recent examples of that expansion.

Abundant and versatile interior space is a key feature of the 270 XS and 240 XS models.

Based of the company’s popular 270 and 240 Bowriders, the XS versions of the 27- and 24-footers are equipped for family-oriented, towed watersports such as tubing and recreational wakeboarding. Each day boat/tow boat hybrid model is equipped with a towing tower outfitted with wakeboard racks, stereo speakers and lights, as well as an expanded swim platform.

The 27- and 24-footers are powered by Volvo Penta engines with the company’s forward-facing drive. To reflect their recreational watersports purpose, both offerings are dressed in aggressive “Xtreme” graphics.

According to the press release, abundant and versatile interior space is a key feature of the 270 XS and 240 XS models.

“Now you can enjoy the latest on-water adventures without compromising space, performance or amenities, and eliminating the need for a second day boat,” the release stated. “A larger swim platform, convertible aft sunpad, backrests that adjust for seating in the round, and table arrangements that serve you throughout the day make lasting memories for all.”

Pricing was not included in the release.

Formula Expanding Outboard-Power Options For Recreational Sportboats

In yet another sign of the times in marine power movements, Formula Boats is offering its popular 350 CBR, 330 CBR and 310 Bowrider recreational sportboats with outboard power. The move was announced in a press release for the Decatur, Ind., company earlier this week.

Consumer demand is driving Formula’s continued push into the outboard power segment with its recreational sportboat models.

“We’re seeing a trend with buyers turning toward outboard power for its reliability and ease of service,” said Wayne Porter, the vice president of sales for Formula boats, which introduced its first quad Mercury Marine Verado 350 outboard engine-powered 430 Super Sport Crossover model in late 2016. “The outboards offer tremendous advantages. And they have killer looks, too. We’re offering the option of custom paint on the outboard cowlings to match the Imron graphics on the boats.”

The 350 and 330 CBR models will be offered with triple Verado outboards up to 350 hp. The 310 model will be available with twin Verado outboards up to 400 hp.

Triple Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboards will not be an option for the 350 and 330 CBR offerings.

“Formula will always be a performance-driven company, but there always also has to be a degree of safety and security in these models,” said Porter. “A pair of 400s would be fine on the 310, but triples would be outside the safety envelope we want to maintain on the 330 and 350 CBR boats”

From the Formula press release: “This smartly balanced combination with expanded cockpit space utilization is the perfect match for all your boating ventures, taking you farther than ever before. The unique Formula design extends the fun into each entertainment zone without giving up the ever important flush cockpit.”

Outerlimits Unveils 'Edgy' SV 50 at Lake of the Ozarks Shootout

Though the members of the Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats crew weren't sure if their newest 50-foot canopied V-bottom would be ready for the long haul from Bristol, R.I., to Central Missouri for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, they finished just in time and managed to make it to the annual aquatic top-speed event. The all-white canopied SV 50 sportboat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1550 engines, won’t compete in the event—it hit the water for the first time yesterday—but it has drawn a crowd at the dock’s of Captain Ron’s Lakeside Bar and Grill, the host venue for this weekend’s competition.

Fresh from the factory and without its interior niceties such as cushions and side panels installed, the first Mystic Powerboats M3800 luxury center console hit the water yesterday with John Cosker, the owner and founder of the DeLand, Fla., center console and catamaran company, and Scott Sjogren of Mystic Powerboats Sales on board. And though both men said they’re looking forward to showcasing the finished product later this year, they also said they were delighted with the performance of the 38-footer, which is powered by triple Mercury Marine Verado 350 outboard engines off New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

“The boat actually exceeded my expectations,” said Sjogren, who collaborated with Cosker on Mystic’s first luxury center console model—the M4200—which was released at the 2015 Miami International Boat Show. “It did things I didn’t dream it would do. It feels heavier than it is (approximately 12,000 pounds, dry) than it is in the water. The stability is unbelievable. And it has a lot of nice, really deep freeboard.

“With triple 350s, it feels like an M4200 with quad 400-hp Mercury Racing Verado outboards—acceleration is great,” he continued. “It’s just sporty.”
